Starfield is an action role-playing video game that allows players to switch between first- and third-person perspectives to explore a vast open world across the galaxy. You can visit over 1,000 planets, moons and space stations. The game uses a mix of computer-generated and hand-crafted content to create these planets, including their landscapes, plants, animals, and interesting places. These characteristics vary depending on factors such as the planet’s star and its atmosphere.

One of the big cities in the game is New Atlantis, the largest fictional city Bethesda has ever produced. As you explore the universe, you’ll encounter many non-player characters (NPCs), some of whom can join your team. Crewmates help with combat, manage items, and talk to other people in the game. The choices you make affect how these characters react. You can even build your own outpost where crew members with special skills can stay, and you might even develop romantic relationships with them.

When you start the game, you can customize your character’s body, appearance, background, and characteristics. Different backgrounds provide you with starting skills. You can gain or lose traits through missions and actions. You can level up and unlock new abilities in five areas: physical, social, combat, science, and technology.

You have a variety of weapons and jetpacks at your disposal, and the gravity on different planets affects how you fight and move. Scanning planets for resources is important for crafting items, and outposts are like base camps where you can research and craft items.

Acquiring and customizing spaceships is also important. They have different parts to replace, and you can choose how to use their powers in combat. You can also interact with spaceships piloted by other NPCs to fight, trade or make deals.
